Osteoporosis awareness campaign at Poisar, Kanidivali,Mumbai

Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because you can’t feel your bones getting weaker. Breaking a bone is often the first sign that you have osteoporosis or you may notice that you are getting shorter or your upper back is curving forward. If you are experiencing height loss or your spine is curving, be sure to talk to your doctor or any orthopedic surgeon right away as the disease may be already in advanced stage.
Bone density measurement by a method called DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) is the most effective way to assess osteoporosis risk.
Factors that may increase the risk of osteoporosis include:
Drop in estrogen after menopause for women
Drop in testosterone for aging male
Smoking and excessive drinking, taking specific medications (such as corticosteroids)
Lack of exercise
Lack of calcium and vitamin D
We talked with around 60 people living in a slum at Poisar, Kandivali, Mumbai. They never heard about osteoporosis disease. Though they know eating milk based products, leafy vegetables and sun are good for health.
We pitched to following people to become Osteoporosis crusaders and create more awareness:
Ladies Tailor running tailoring shop there
Football players living in that slum
Snacks vendor who sell snacks there and most of his consumer are women living there
and Group of old people who every evening chat in chaupal there
We explained them what is osteoporosis disease, causes of that disease, diagnosis and medication.
We'll continue our awareness campaign and hope many people become Osteoporosis Crusader and create awareness about Osteoporosis disease.
